THE LEAGUE ASSERTS ITSELF
BY fifty-three votes to one, with Italy opposing and Austria and Hungary abstaining from voting, the League of Nations Assembly has passed a resolution constituting a Sanctions Co-ordinating Committee consisting of all members of the Assembly to deal with Italy as a covenant-breaking State. If the coercion applied to Italy turns out more a pretence than a reality ; if the action taken fails to be swift and effective, bringing the war to an end, humbling the aggressor and establishing the security of Abyssinia, the League in place of achieving a triumph will have sown the seeds of its own dissolution. If events turn out differently; if Italy is dealt with firmly—is brought sharply and strictly to account—and the majority of the Powers show that they are whole-heartedly behind Geneva, and will vigorously support any power, large or small, that is wantonly attacked with as much spirit as if their own interests were menaced, then there is hope for the League fulfilling the high ideals that lie at its very root.
