Manukau School Concert
A concert arranged by the Manukau Native school teachers and scholars was held in Kaitaia last Friday, and a very good programme was staged, but the audience was disappointingly small, the many counter attractions no doubt being responsible for this. Perhaps the best features on the pro" gramme were the Maori hakas and poi dances in costume, the long poi being especially good. In these the children were led by one of their teachers, Miss Findlay, who was also in costume. The harmonising of the children’s voices in the part songs was excellent. An item by the primers in which each child came forward and recited, was well received, especially one, “Napoleon’s farewell to his Grandmother", which brought down the house. The individual items, especially those of a humourous turn, were also splendid. A playette “Mischievous Jock” was also staged by the children.
Flag drill by the boys and girls and other items made up a good evening’s entertainment, that reflected credit on the children and their teachers, Misses J. Topia and Findlay, for the manner in which the children had been trained for their parts.
What would northern sportsmen think of this?—Reports from quite a number of shooters are to the effect that pheasants were numerous round Wellington last season, some sportsmen being lucky enough to get at least one bird each day. The exportation from New Zealand of coined copper, save with the consent of the Minister of Customs, has been prohibited.
