In and About the County

For the past'week or more two fishing boats from Auckland have been operating in Doubtless Bay, taking very large hauls of fish. * * * * The weather has been unusually mild near the sea this season. Mr. Miller of Taipa already has green vegetables ready for use and strawberries have been gathered from a garden in the Oruru Valley. • * * * The Topia orchestra from Dargaville who are playing for a series of dances in the Hokianga district, will be the guests of Miss J. Topia at Manukau next week. They will play for dances at Ahipara and Hereldno. • * * * Immediately the Ahipara School broke up last Friday for its delayed term holidays, the builders commenced carrying out the work of alterations and renovations to the buildings, and good progress is being made. * * * * Quite a busy time is being experienced in the building trade in the Oruru Valley. Mr. Trevor Garton is erecting a new house on his tarm and Mr. G. A. Hancox has started on his new house. Mr. R' Garton is preparing to remove his house te a more favourable site. L. • * * * The road between Oruru and Taipa is getting in a most deplorable state, the gorse being so high that it hangs over the road and touches the sides of cars. On the eastern side of Taipa bridge is a very bad hole that, if left, will soon render the road impassable. # * * * At a meeting of Directors of the Kaitaia Dairy Company, held on Monday. 32 applications were considered for the position of factory manager. The selection was narrowed down to three who have been invited to meet the Directors at a meeting, today, Friday, after which it is anticipated the final selection will be made. * * * * Work will probably commence within the next few weeks on the preparation of an aerodrome at Waipapakauri on the old racecourse. The F.W.D. have made arrangements for the site and the work will be carried out under their supervision with unemployed labour. It is stated that a landing ground large enough for trans-Tasman ulanes could be constructed at this site. • * » * The gangs of men employed by the F.W.D. on the Kaingaroa and the Ahipara Hill roads have pushed forward with the. work and these roads now show a very decided improvement over their condition of a few mouths ago. Fair stretches of metal have been laid and the quarry that the Department opened on the Kaingaroa road is producing a fair quality of metal. * * * * While fishing at the entrance to the Houhora Harbour last weekend Mr. Frank Fuckey of Kaitaia and Mr. Fred Wagener of Puketiui landed a very large schnapper, believed to be a record for these waters. The fish weighed 25f41bs and was over three feet long. The scales measured V/i", long. Mr. Puckey, who hooked the fish, thought he had a shark on the line, and he had to play the fish for a considerable time before he could land it. * * * * The state of the road from Waipapakauri to the Ninety Mile Beach was discussed by the Council of the Automobile Association, Auckland, at its last meeting when a communication was received from the Mangonui County Council stating that it was prepared to spend £SO if the Association would provide a similar amount. The Council decided to reply that it could give no financial aid, but would approach the Main Highways Board in an effort to have the road declared a secondary highway. * * * * Up to date this month 1.55 inches of rain has been recorded in Kaitaia, rain falling on every day except the Ist, 2nd and 10th of the month, the heaviest being on the 3rd when half an inch fell.
