Through the heavy cartage over the new metal on Fryer’s Road, this inetal is badly cut up. * * * * At the Thames Races last weekend, Mr. W. H. Maria’s 2-year-old, Velocipede gained two first places, and A. H. Long’s Sir Abb a first. * * * * During tbs past week, the dust raised by traffic through the main street of Kaitaia, has been even worse than usual and an annoyance to all who use the street. « * * 9 We have not had the money to keep oui bye-roads in order, in fact during the past few years our metalled side roads have deteriorated considerably.— County Chairman. • » * * There was a good attendance o dancers at the Raeo hall last Thursday when a most enjoyable evening of dancing was spent. Miss D. Flinn and Mr. W. Wagoner won the hut waltz. * * * * A meeting of the Awanui Cricket Club was held on Tuesday evening when it was decided that owing to their inability to field an eleven on Saturday, to withdraw from the County competition. * * # * The flower beds at the Kaitaia Bowling Club's grounds make a striking picture with their multi coloured blooms surrounded by the white paths and limestone rock borders.
A meeting of the Committee controlling [the Anglican Flower Show to be held in Kaitaia on Wednesday, February 20th, was held last Friday when preliminary arrangements for the forthcoming event were discussed and decided on. * * * * The P.W.D. hope to complete the metalling of Duncan's road this summer and also to blind the sections of rough metal on this road. The County Council is to lend the Department their crusher and to prepare the clay section for the metal. * * * * On Sunday, a carrier pigeon in an exhausted condition dropped near Mr. Y. Flavell’s camp on the Ninety Mile Beach. The bird had an aluminium band on one leg, with tlie letters IT.V. C. -33, 104 and a rubber band on the other leg, with the figures 842. The bird was very weak and showed signs of having travelled a long distance, but it revived under the care of Mr. Flavell. 9 » # * Discussing the activities of the Highway Board Traffic Inspectors in the district, members of the County Council exthe opinion that these inspectors were rather too rigid in the enforcement of the regulations, whereas the County Inspector administrated the regulations from a commoj] sense point of view giving to motorists warning regarding trivial breaches, but prosecuting if the warning is not taken. This attitude is that usually adopted by local authority Traffic Inspectors, but motorists were being prosecuted for most trivial offences by visiting Highway Board Inspectors.
