County Half day to be Thursday

At the County Council meeting this week it was decided on a unanimous vote that the half holiday in the county be Thursday. A deputation from the Mangonui Civic Eeague, with Messrs R. T. Wrathall and A. J. McKay as the spokesmen, met the Council previous to the special meeting and put forward their arguments in support of a mid-week half holiday from both the public and business men’s point of view. When the question was discussed at the Council meeting Cr. Holder moved that Thursday be declared the statutory half holiday in the county. This was seconded by Cr. Garton. Cr. Berghan, Barriball and the chairman stated that although they personally favoured a universal Saturday half holiday, yet owing to the condition in the county, and that Kaitaia was open on Saturday, it would he inflicting a hardship on the businessmen of the other centres to again force the closing on Saturday afternoon. The question should not be left to local bodies to consider but the Government should declare a universal half holiday. It was an anomalous position, said Cr. Thompson, when a small area of the county, Kaitaia, could practically dictate to the rest of the county as to the half holiday. Cr. Matthews said that he had consistently sup. V ported a mid-week holiday, at present the Mangonui County was the only area in the north that closed on Saturday afternoon.
