Hospital Board Election

Sir, —In your issue of September 21st a letter appears over the signature of Gordon Millar, which is an insult to tbe intelligence of both Mr. Clark, the successful candidate, and the electors who placed him at the top of the poll. He insinuates that popularity is Mr. Clark’s only qualification. Had Mr. Millar been one of the executive of the A. and P. Society with Mr. Clark as president, for the past three or four years, or on the school committee for the last few months, he would perhaps have a different opinion of Mr. Clark’s ability. He would also realise that if Ire undertook anything he did so wholeheartedly. With regard to Mr. Mclntosh, no one. doubts his ability to fill the position, but to say that he was the peoples’ ablest representative in bringing the hospital to Kaitaia is quite another matter. I know of more than one who would like to claim that honour, but in my opinion Mr. Kitchen alone is responsible for the

I ho pital being in Kaitaia at the present time. While others were talking of a brick building, “a £40,000 scheme”, Mr. Kitchen spoke of the possibility of shifting the wooden hospital buildings from Mangonui, and was laughed at for his pains, but still undaunted he got an estimate of the cost at his own expense which made others sit up and take notice. All other members of the board, including myself, were mere pawns in the game and if there is honour and glory attached to the removal of the hospital, it certainly belongs to Mr. Kitchen. For my part as a director of the Kaitaia Dairy Company I question Mr. Mclntosh’s right to stand for the position of member for the Hospital Board while occupying the position of secretary for that company, and I would have put the matter before the shareholders at the recent annual meeting had it not been for the fact that Mr. Mclntosh had intimated at a Hospital Board meeting a tew weeks before tbi t event, that he would not he standing for the next Hospital Board election. Yours, etc., DAN LEWIS
