The levy on the local bodies has been decreased for maintenance charges, but a levy has been made under capital heading; no levy was made under this heading last year. This year £3005 is to be levied on the local bodies (£2740 from the County and £265 from the Town Board), an increase of £l5O over last year Against this £650 is being repayed by way of interest and sinking fund on the loan of £3OOO for the removal oi the hospital. After the estimates had been read, members remarked that the secretary’s estimates had proved very accurate last year, as also the year before; he had been as near in his estimates as it was humanly possible to be. The estimates were passed with little discussion, the secretary stating in response to a question that allowance had been made for contingencies in the removal of the hospital.
At the beginning of the road leading up to the old Mangonui hospital at Mangonui there is a sign, “No Exit.” It must have given many a patient a bad shock. Again! Just before entering the Russell main street, a sign says, “Next 300 yards Dead Slow.” We have often wondered whether it’s true or not.
