Hospital Board

A meeting of the Mangonui Hospital Board was held in Kaitaia on Tuesday of last week when there were present Messrs 0. B. Michie (Chairmau) T. S, Houston, D. H. Lewis, L. J. Matthews D. Kitchen, L. A. Mclntosh, J. W. Huskin and F. Holder, General A. letter was received from Mr. G. Rust, Headteacher of the Te Hapua Native School asking that the Board rent him the Nurses’ Cottage alongside the school at Te Hapua, during the period that the schoolhouse was being renovated and also if the Board was prepared to rent the cottage for a long period or alternatively sell the cottage. On account of the great help that Mr. Rust had been to the Board, it was decided that he bo allowed tho use of the cottage free of any cost to himself. Regarding the sale of the cottage, Dr. Cook is to be asked to report to the Board on the advisability or otherwise of disposing of the property. Removal of Hospital Affairs Mr. McLaughlin, of the Public Works Department met the Board in committee regarding the tenders for the removal of the County Hospital from Mangonui to Kaitaia. The position regarding tho writ of injunction served on the Board to restrain it from proceeding with the removal of the Hospital was explained by the Chairman who stated that on being served with the writ, the Secretary and himself conferred with tho Board’s solicitor, regarding the cause of action to be taken to defend the case. Mr. A. Logan who was present at the meeting stated that after going through the documents lie considered that if the case were taken before the Judge in chambers he would strike it out as there was no cause for action. This course had been adopted with the result that the Judge had dismissed the case. The Board endorsed the action of the Chairman regarding the steps taken to defend the case.

Formal resolutions regarding the loan of £3,000 from the State Fire Office for the removal of the Hospital were passed. The yearly payments of interest and sinking fund amount to £672/6/8, in half yearly payments on the Ist of June and Ist of December of each year for five years. The first payment is to be made on the Ist June 1934. Tenders Tenders, returnable by Tuesday 19th December, are tobe called for the erection of a circular concrete resevoir with a capacity of 20,000 gallons, on the Trigg Hill on Mr. J. L. Hester’s property at Kaitaia. This resevoir was considered by the Public Works Department as a necessary adjunct to the water supply for the consolidated Hospital.
