Kaitaia A’s win from Waipap.

At the Showgrounds, Kaitaia, last Saturday, the local Junior A team defeated Waipap by 16 points to 6, in the first match of the second round in the Junior competition.

From the start of play, Kaitaia had it all their own way, and play moved to Waipap’s quarter. An infringement on the part of Waipap enabled Tom Flinn to draw first blood for Kaitaia with a nice kick. Kaitaia 3 Waipap 0

The Kaitaia forwards having the advantage of the play in the loose, took up the offensive, and a fine movement in which Cowie, Whitefield, Mockett and McCullock participated, resulted in the latter scoring. Flinn put over a difficult kick. Kaitaia 8 Waipap 0

Waipap then came to the fore, driving Kaitaia into their 25, but the latter team were able to return play to midfield with a penalty kick. Flinn secured from a short punt by Tara, the Waipap fullback and by cross kicking, gave Fryer his opportunity to gather in the hall and race over for a good try. Flinn converted. Kaitaia 13 Waipap 0

With the points mounting against them Waipap took more iuterest in the game, the forwards bucking up considerably and carrying all before them made Kaitaia force. From a scrum on Kaitaia’s line, Rivers scooped up the ball passing to Yates, who dashed over to start Waipap’s account. Housham missed the kick. Kaitaia 13 Waipap 3 Kaitaia, a little startled at the turn of events, came back to the tlieir fast forwards doing great work. A dribbling rush originated by Cowie resulted in Waipap’s line being invaded with inevitable disaster. Flinn just missed the posts with the kick. Kaitaia 16 Waipap 3 Waipap determing to give a better account of themselves, took up the attack the forwards working hard, taking the ball into Kaitaia’s territory. Good defensive play on the part of the Kaitaia backs held Waipap in check for a short time, but the latter were not to be denied, Tai Yates scrambling over. Housham failed with the kick. Kaitaia 16 Waipap 6 For the last few minutes play seesawed between the two quarter lines with little advantage to either side, the game ending with no further score. Mr. P. Tahu refereed in his usual inimitable style, his strict rulings briuging him up to the position of being one of the keenest referees in the County. It must be noted that on the last two Saturdays Mr. Tahu refereed two games running on each day under deplorable conditions. Notes on Play In the tight, the Waipap forwards held their own, but were outclassed by their faster opponents in the loose. For the Kaitaia forwards Cowie, Mockett, Whitefield and F. Donaldson were playing up to rep standard, and could give the seniors a few points in dribbling. Werner and White also played good solid games the latter being unfortunate in being knocked out at one juncture in the game. For Waipap Davis, Yates, P. Rivers, P. Brown and G. Porter worked like trojans while W. Taru at fullback was safe.

It was unfortunate that Waipap could not restrain their feelings, three of their players being ordered off for rough play. The Kaitaia backs were too good for their opponents’ rearguard, although they were rather over-eager- and tried to pick up the greasy ball too much. Mita King at fullback was safe while Tom Flinn lived up to his reputation as a kicker of high standard. Despite the muddy field at least one of the Kaitaia rearguard was able to keep his jersey clean. * * * * Kaitaia B s defaulted to Pamapuria Juniors last Saturday. * * * * The Awanui Juniors were defeated by Rarawa at Awanui last Saturday, the score being 12 points to nil.
