Whangaroa County Chronicle

Omaunu Football Dance Pye’s Hall was the scene of considerable festivity on Thursday night when the Omaunu footballers gave a dance to raise funds. Mr. J. Hills carried off his duties as M.C. in a very capable manner. The music was supplied by Mr. W. Pye. A considerable number of dancers on the floor have placed the Omaunu Club on a better financial plane. A dainty and appetising supper served by the ladies added not a little to the enjoyment of the evening which was brought to a close by the playing of the National Anthem in the late hours of the night. * Bible Class Rally

A most successful Bible Class Rally was held in Whangarei during the week-end. Delegates from various classes were present, including two from the Kaeo Class. The service on Sunday morning in the Whangarei Methodist Church took the form of a Thanksgiving Service, when donations from all the classes were received. The speakers at the service were the Rev. R. Coombridge and Miss D. Sheat, Y.W.’s travelling secretary. Basketball The Kaeo Basketball Club held a meeting on Wednesday afternoon last, to discuss various matters of business. The resignation of Miss Florence _ Matthews as president of the Club was accepted with regret. She has been transferred to the Victoria Valley school and now finds it impossible to continue her associations with the Club.

The Club is now affiliated with the North Auckland Basketball Association. It was decided to hold a dance to raise funds in the second week of July. Challenges from neighbouring teams were received and will be accepted in the near future.

After the meeting the team played a friendly match with the Kaeo school team. The game was won by the senior team by 11 goals to 9. The game was very close and showed some promising players among the junior girls.

On Saturday afternoon the Kaeo basketball team travelled to Totara North, where they played the Totara team on their home* ground. The general play was good, but a decided weakness was shown in the Kaeo goal throwers. When the whistle sounded for time, the goals stood at 17 to 3 in favour of Totara. Mr. Kenney and Mr. Johns kindly transported the team from Kaeo. Football Kaeo v. Apanui The Kaeo team travelled to Pupuke to meet Apanui on their home ground. Apanui kicked off with a slight breeze in their favour. Play was carried to the visitors 25-line. Followed desultory play with Apanui looking backward. From the line-out, an Apanui forward secured and dived over the line, to score in the corner. The kick at the goal failed. Apanui 3, Kaeo 0. Kaeo kicked off from the centre but Apanui forced the play back to the visitors’ 25, keeping them on the sprint and causing them to force down several times. From a bad pass in Apanui’s back line A. Johns secured and dashed up the field. He short-punted over the full-back’s head and Fricker who followed up dashed over the line to make a very neat try. Kaeo failed to make the major points.

Apanui and Kaeo were now even, with 3 points each. From the kickoff Apanui carried play into the Kaeo half, and were successful in crossing the line. Apanui again failed to convert. Apanui were now in the lead with 6 points to 3. Kaeo kicked off and play remained in mid-field. From

a pass, S. Taniora secured and dashed over the line. The kick again failed. The two teams were now even with 6 points each. Apanui kicked off and took the play into the visitors’ territory. From a line-out Apanui crosskicked and the wing ran over the line to score near the posts. This time Apanui converted. Apanui 11, Kaeo 6. Half-time came with the visitors on the defence.

Play was more even after half-time with Kaeo making a determined effort Kaeo secured and the backs were put in motion ; followed a good run carrying play well into Apanui’s 25. Call for off-side play and Kaeo were awarded a free-kick which was successful, bringing the score to 9 points for Kaeo. Kaeo tried very hard after this but they found the Apanui defence to be sound, and the final whistle went with no change in the score. Apanui 11, Kaeo 9. Mr. V. Dane was referee in this very close game. Oruru v. Omaunu Oruru met Omaunu in a match on the Kaeo ground on Saturday. Owing to a breakdown, the Oruru team was late in arriving and the game continued until the light was very bad. The only try scored for Omaunu was made by R. Bramley, but the try at converting failed. For Oruru B. Harrison scored and the try was converted by F. Pye. The second try was scored by T. Garton. The final score stood at B—3 in favour of Oruru. In the Omaunu team the forwards who played very sound games were the Weber brothers and R. Herbert, while in the backs R. Fuller was outstandingly good. T. Garton and S. Gibbs in the Oruru forwards played very well, while the best back was B. Harrison. Play was keen and very even throughout the match.
