Women’s Division Farmers’ Union The ordinary monthly meeting of the Kaeo branch was held in the library rooms last Thursday, when well over 30 members were present. The meeting took the form of a poetry afternoon, several members reciting, and others reading extracts from the poets. A women’s exchange was held with the usual success. A few necessitous cases were dealt with and a quantity of vegetables was sent to Sister Esther. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Maddox, A. Shepherd and J. McKeown. Address by Mr. H. M. Rushworth Mr. W. H. Lane presided over a fair attendance of electors in Pye’s Hall last Thursday evening when Mr. H. M. Rushworth, M.P., delivered a very interesting address. He spoke for nearly two hours, dealing in the main with the causes of the depression and currency affairs. At the close of his speech a few questions were answered. A vote of thanks was carried with considerable acclamation. Hospital Dance A dance in aid of the hospital funds was held in Kent’s Hall, Whangaroa, last Thursday evening. Enjoyable music was supplied by Mrs. J. L. Johanson and Mr. James. Supper was supplied by the ladies’ committee. The sum of £4 10/ taken at the door goes to the fund for the upkeep of the hospital wireless set. Seven-a-Side Football The usual Seven-a-Side Tournament was held on the Union’s ground at Kaeo on Saturday, June 3rd. In all there were eleven senior teams and five school teams competing. The Kaeo team emerged the victors in the latter competition, defeating the Convent by 3 points to nil. Matches in the senior competition for the Lionel Mewett Memorial Cup were decided as follows : First Round.—Akatere B 6, Omaunu B 3; Akatere A won by default from Matauri B; Kaeo B 15, Apanui B 0, Oruru A 8, Matauri A 0. Second Round. —Oruru B 3, Akatere B 0; Kaeo A 8, Akatere A 0; Apanui A 11, Kaeo B 0; Omaunu A 16, Oruru A 0. Semi-Final.—Kaeo A 6, Oruru B 0; Omaunu A 10, Apanui A 0. Thus Omaunu A and Kaeo A were left to dispute the final. Omaunu scored early in the game—an unconverted try. About three minutes before time, however, Kaeo notched a good try—also unconverted. It seemed anybody’s game, but from the kickoff Omaunu scored again and then once more just on time, so that a very exciting match ended 9—3 in Omaunu’s favour. There can be no doubt that the victory was a well deserved one. The personnel of the winning team was as follows: R. Fuller (capt.), E. Weber, K. Weber, R. Herbert, J. Hills, J. Hughes, and W. Hughes. At the close of the day Mr. L. M. Lane, in a short speech on behalf of the Rugby Union, presented trophies to Dave Whitehead, captain of the Kaeo school team, and R. Fuller, the Omaunu skipper, both of whom responded suitably. The gate money goes as usual to the funds of the Whangaroa hospital, which will benefit on this occasion by £2O. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was provided by the lady supporters. A surprising occurrence, and one upon which but few failed to remark, was the fact that practically no rain fell while the football was in progress. This phenomenen has registered more than once of late, and it is felt in some circles that there is a very grave danger of the words “Winterless North” being reinstated in the vocabulary. Next Saturday’s Fixtures Kaeo and Omaunu at Kaeo 2.45 p.m. Considerable interest is attached to this match, as Kaeo is leading Omaunu by one point in the Competition. Spectators should see some sensational football. Oruru and Akatere meet at Oruru, 2.45 p.m. ; Apanui and Matauri at Matauri, 2.45 p.m.
