SCIENCE AND THE FARMER A very interesting discussion took place at the Kaitaia Farmers’ Union meeting on Thursday on a proposal brought .forward by the president, Mr. G. Ilodgson, to hold a series of discussions on farming problems. There were many matters directly relating to farming which could be profitably debated, so that members could share with each other the fruits of their experience, observation and reading on these matters. Mr. H. S. Matthews suggested that the aid of the Fields Instructor, Mr. Hamblyn, should be enlisted. The idea being approved, the chairman and secretary were appointed to arrange subjects for the discussions. Kaitaia Y.M.A.C. Mr. G. Slane delivered a very interesting' and informative lecture on Free Trade and protection to the members of the Young Men’s Anglican Club at the meeting on Monday night. It was a new subject to most of -the members, who followed Mr. Slane’s exposition of the conflicting theories closely, giving him a hearty vote of thanks at the close of the lecture. Using the Local Product The Mangonui County Council is evidently a firm believer in encouraging local industry. The ash trays used by Councillors at meeting's are large toheroa shells, which, beautifully polished, serve the purpose admirably. Was not a toheroa shell suggested as the County crest?
