SCHOOL CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS BALL

The Peria hall was a scene of a bright and happy function on Friday evening, when the children of Oruru, Peria and Paranui schools held their Fancy Dress Ball. The hall was full to overflowing with people from all parts of the district, and the attendance must have been gratifying to all those > who assisted in making event such a huge success. The display of dancing given by the pupils in the first part of the evening spoke volumes for me patient training given by the teachers. The judges, Mrs. Costell, Miss McLeod and Mr. N. Larkins certainly had a hard duty to perform in selecting the first awards in each class, as the dresses were both beautiful and varied, and reflected great credit on all the parents. The following children were awarded prizes : Nancy Jacentho, as a Butterfly, for best dressed girl, 5 years and under. Peter Bribben, as a Tin Soldier, for best dressed boy, 5 years and under. Louise Larkins and Row Smith, as Adam and Eve, for the most original dress, 5 years and under. Norine Taylor, as an Eastern Lady, for best dressed girl, 6 years and over. Hector Frew, as an Indian Rajah, for best dressed boy, 6 years and over. Peter Campbell and Danny Emanuel, as Robinson Crusoe and Man Friday, for the most original dress. At the conclusion of the children’s dance supper was handed round to all the children, after which the adults I indulged in dancing until 2 a.m. Mr. G. J. Grant acted as master of ceremonies during the later part of the evening. KAITAIA CRICKET CLUB The following players have been selected to represent Kaitaia versus Valley Single at Kaitaia, on Saturday next ; Sowter, Waddell, Bradford, Clark, Moyes, Dale, Torrie, Stanton, McKenzie, Black, R. Werner. Emergencies, Moore, T. Matthews and N. Matthews. All players are requested to be on the field at 9.45 a.m. sharp. The Club will be holding regular practices on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, commencing at 5 p.m. All members will be expected to roll up. WAIKURUKI TENNIS CLUB The perfect weather caused a large number of members to turn out on Saturday for an afternoon of tennis. Among the visitors present were Messrs. Ward and Robinson, wellknown in Auckland tennis circles, who gave a display of tennis skill such as is rarely seen in the North. The usual dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and the courts were kept fully occupied until dusk. OPENING AWANUI TENNIS COURTS The Awanui Tennis Club held their opening day on Saturday, and many visitors attended and helped make the day a success. The day was ideal, and play continued until dark. The formal opening ceremony was dispensed with. Remember, Remember The good people of Awanui celebrated Guy Fawkes day by a huge bonfire in front of the hotel and a big display of fireworks. It was done, of course, to please the youngsters, but their elders seemed to enjoy the celei bration quite as much.
