Reporting on the condition of the Ruawai Settlers’ Hall the secretary said: “The piano was in a very bad state, the mice having got in through the broken gauze at the back and destroyed several keys and packing. This was repaired at a cost of £4.” This is worse than the proverbially hungry church mice, who leave the organ alone and stick to a diet of hymn book covers.
