Liability of Beekeepers

A judgement of Mr. Justice Adams holds beekeepers responsible for any damage their bees do under certain circumstances. Mr. L. F. Robins appealed against a decision by which he was held liable for the loss of two horses stung to death by his bees. He had about 70 hives containing some millions of bees near the boundary of the farm of a Mr. Kennedy, and while a field of oats was being reaped the bees attacked the horses stinging them to death. His honor ruled that Robins was guilty of neglect in keeping so many hives near the boundary of Kennedy’s land and held with the authorities that “Bees kept in unreasonable numbers, and at an unreasonable place, and with appreciable danger to a neighbour, having done damage, were held to affect their owner with liability.”
