RELIEVING DISTRESSED MAORIS
As a result of representations made by Mr. H. M. Rushworth, M.P., to the Minister of Native Affairs, as to the distressed condition of Natives residing on the shores of the Bay of Islands, two officers of the Department for Native Affairs, Mr. W. Cooper and Major Dansey, were instructo visit the Native districts north of Auckland. In order to relieve the most necessitous cases they arranged contracts for development work on Native development schemes, Board loan blocks and on privately owned farms. They have completed portions of the Bay of Islands, Kaikohe, North and South Hokianga, Whangape, the Mangonui and Whangaroa Counties, and are at present working southwards to Whangarei and Kaipara.
The two officers are also arranging school tea funds where most needed as they pass through the districts. In addition the Department purchased 100 tons of Canterbury potatoes, which have been distributed on advice of the field officers.
