DUNCAN’S ROAD.
METALLING KAINGAROA END. DEPUTATION URGES ACTION. A strong plea for the metalling of the Kaingaroa end of Duncan’s Road was made by a deputation consisting of Messrs. Cooper and Brown which waited on the Hon, W. B. Tavermr on his recent visit to Awanui. Speaking on behalf of the settlers on the Kaingaroa end of the road, Mr. Cooper stated the P.W, D. had completed the formation and adverting of each end of the roach He understood about 3% miles of the Fairburns end had been metalled, but nothing had been put or. the Kaingaroa end, which had to carry considerable traffic. To leave the road as it was would be a tearful waste of public money, for if left without metal it would become almost impassable in winter and would have to be formed again. It was said there was a considerable grant available for the road, and Mr. Cooper urged that the money be spent on the Kaingaroa end, on metalling instead ot on bridges. There was a steadily increasing traffic, the cream output having doubled in the last 2 years and he urged the Minister and the member for the district to do all in their power to expedite the m 'ailing of the road. To show the progress of the area served by the road, Mr. Jones said that whereas four years ago only 3 bales of wool had come out, this season there would be over 53 bales. The road was now in first-class condition to take metal, but if I—ft in its present state the settlers would be unable to get up there at all, and in the earlv season would have to sledge out their cream at big expense to everybody. The Hon. W. B. Taverner promised to pass the representations on to the Minister of Public Works. “1 would like to say,” stated Capt. Rushworth, referring to the tact that the road was being formed as an unemployment relief work, “that the settlers are to be very much congratulated on getting the road at all, for departments seemed convinced there is no unemployment un here at all. Having the road free is a matter that settlers in other districts would give their ears to get.”
