THEFT AND FALSE PRETENCES.
VALUELESS CHEdUES ISSUED. MAORI GETS SIX MONTHS’ HARD. Pleading guilty at the Magistrate’s Court last Friday to charges of obtaining goods by means of valueless cheques, William Popata, a young Maori, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour in Mt. Eden. Popata stole several cheques and filled them in tor amounts of £9 6s and £6 ss, Constable Thornell stated, and with them had purchased clothing at Herekino, getting £6 10s change. The storekeeper had gone after Popata and had recovered the clothes, but the £6 10s was still missing. Popata had also taken a saddle and a coat from a whare. Since his arrest he had been in custody for over a week. Accused had been convicted at Rawene on four charges of theft and also on a charge of undlawfullv converting a horse. “There is a lot of this cheque business going on in this district,” Constable Thornell concluded. On the first charge Popata was sentenced to six months’ hard labour in Mt. Elen ; on the other charged he was convicted and discharged.
