DEPRIVED OF WATER.

RESULT OF DRAINAGE OPERATIONS.

SETTLERS ASK FOR PIPE-LINE SUPPLY.

Deprived of water for their stock as a result of the soillway draining swamps which previously held water, settlers whose property adjoins spillway running parallel with the KaitaiaAwanui Road held a meeting of protest last week. It was contended that the spillway had not benefited the properties concerned, since the land was high country and not swamp, but on the other hand had caused damage and inconvenience by caus ing the loss of water for stock.

A wire was sent to the Drainage Department asking that a temporary supply of water should be made availabe by means of a pipe-line running alongside the spillway. Advice has now been received that Mr. McMorran, chief drainage engineer, will confer with the settlers on the matter in Kaitaia on December 11.
