CRICKET COMPETITION COMMENCES.
KAITAIA GROUND UNPLAYABLE. BROADWOOD DEFEATS HEREKINO. EXCITING SECOND-GRADE GAME. After two postponements owing to unfavourable weather conditions the Mangonui Cricket Association’s competition commenced last Saturday. Owing to the bad condition of the Kaitaia ground the Kaitaia-Mangonui match was cancelled, b it a good game was witnessed a! On the bowling side Bow took 5 for II and Cooper 3 for 9 For Herekino Geary, Dudd and Bourke made double figures, the 1 two first-mentioned players showing considerable promise. Bowling for Herekino Reid look 4 for 40. Kaitaia Seconds'Narrow Win Playing against Victoria Valley at the Valiev, the Kaitaia second-grade team scraped home with a margin of three runs with little time to spare. Kaitaia won the toss and elected to bat first, the innings producing 64 runs. The only ones to reach double figures were S. Matthews (23) and G. Puckey (iH, but Matthews was lucky to survive as long as he did, being diopped several times. Valley in their first innings made 42, H. Tracey and C. Pa--ther, with 11 each, being the only ones to reach double figures. Batting after the lunch interval Kaitaia knocked" tip a secondinnings total of 52, 15 coming from B. Matthews and 11 from G. Puckey. With a change of bowlers in this innings Valley gave the Kaitaia batsmen ■ considerably less latitude. Valley went in wanting 75 to win but were dismissed for 72, the last man going in with nine I minutes to go. Excitement increased as Valiev’s score crept up, and the narrow margin of 3 ' runs in Kaitaia’s favour provided one of the best finishes seen for j some time. Considerable promise was shown by A. Thompson, who in 1 his work for the Valley showed the makings of a good bowler. Another promising feature of the s match was the holding of several j good catches by one or two of the I younger Kaitaia players. *!
