Fighting White Plague

Christmas Seal Campaign

Special Stamps To Raise

Funds

Dreaded throughout the world as the White Plague, the scourge of consumption has reached an alarming incidence even in New Zealand. In an effort to raise funds to fight the disease the Government has arranged an Anti-tuberculosis Christmas Seal campaign under which the public will contribute to the fighting fund by the purchase of special postage stamps.

It was originally proposed to issue a supplementary penny stamp, but to comply with the rulings of the International Postal Convention this has now been superseded by a speciallydesigned combined postage and charity twopenny stamp, one penny being for postage and one penny for the fund. It was found impossible to produce this year the particularly fine design most desirable, and the central figure of the design upon which the engravers are now working is a New Zealand nurse in uniform, with a border of Maori pattern. To indicate the purpose to which the prp-

ceeds will be devoted the stimp will bear the words, “Help to Stamp out Tuberculosis.” The designing and printing is being done in New Zealand, and it is expected the stamps will be on sale at the end of November.

An ex-patient of the Puktora Sanatorium, a young man fully restored to health and industry, has written to the Minister of Health (Hon. A. J. Stallworthy) enthusiastically endorsing the campaign and enclosing £25 for the purchase of three thousand of the stamps.
