Herekino News

(Own Correspondent)

With a beautiful day on Saturday all Herekino turned out to see the football, and basketball games. In sport of all kinds a good crowd on the side lines; helps to make good sport, and judging by the poor attendance that turn out in other places Herekino players should feel proud at the way in which the spectators roll up. The tootball ground is one of the best in the North and would be a fitting place to see the reps in action this year.

As a curtain raiser to the senior match the local school boys played the Ahipara boys. The boys were all out to win on both sides, but the Herekino hoys won by 13 to 3- Mr E Bourke was on the whistle and the hoys kept him moving.

The senior match started a bit late but proved exciting. The Painapuria club did not turn out their usual team, but under the circumstances did not do so bad, the Herekino team winning the game by 33 to 3. From a sideline pjim ot view the home boys did not come up to their performance they put up at Kaita a and one missed their fine passing rush.

Mr Val Jury controlled the game and is worthy of special mention as a splendid and capable referee. Most good referees are to be f ound in the side-line but Mr Jury proved one too many for them.

The basketball resulted Manakau 24 Whaugape 2. Ahipara 26 Herekino 4. Manakau 2 Ahipara 26. Herekino 14 Whangape 2. Ahipara 26 Whangape 4. Herekino 16 Manakau 18. Ihe play in all games was fast and well controlled.

Whangape being a new club were outclassed but will be worth watching in the near future. Miss N Leap, Captain.

The Ahipara players can handle the leather very well but are inclined to overguard, and wilh astrict referee would be often penalised.

The Herekino girls played very fair seeing they have had no practise, but will do much better than last season by their play. Mrs Surgenor, Captain. The Manakau team are a solid pack and out the weight into the game, they would be well advised to play more silent it being very nol ceable to old players calling out ins ructions and with an occasional growl.

Taking the games right throughout Herekino plays the

real silent game. Miss J Topia captained the Manakau team.
