Sailer Chris Writes Home,
Aboard The Good Ship Teteala. In previous issues we have published at intervals interesting letters of adventure from the pen of Mr Chris Dunn, who is “seeing the world.” For sometime the letters received have been from the Sailors Home, Rotterdam. The following epistle however, received by Mrs Dunn, Senr., shows that Sailor Chris has changed his destination. The letter is as follows T.T. Teteala Tela Honduras Central America 3/7/28 Dear Gran, —I am writing this at sea but we will be in to-morrow and as I wont have time to write from Tela, I am taking this opportunity. I had a very pleasant surprise two days before I left Rotterdam, this trip. Went up to the Sailors Home, on the off chance that I would be lucky enough to get some mail and there were seven letters waiting for me —two from you, two from Dad, two from Bert and one from Florence M. I was as excited as a two year old and have read them about twenty times. I was very hungry for news from New Zealand, after a year of silence. I made two voyages in my last ship the “Paquaru” one to Jamaica, and one to Tela. The first voyage, we went to Liverpool, and I spent my first week in England, and had a great time. It seemed strange to hear everyone talking English, the first really English port I have been in since leaving Australia. I intended going to see Aunt Ellen, but my only suit was in a sad mess, and I was not going there looking like a hobo. I ord ered a new rig out in Liverpool, expecting to go back, but have not been since. Last voyage we went to Bremen, Germany and stayed a couple of days. It is a large place, and it is hard to imagine Germany having been conquered, not long since, by the tone of that town. Everyone seems happv and contended with no apparent grudge against the English, quite the reverse. From Bremer I went to Rotterdam again where I joined this ship of the same Company going from here to Europe either Bremerhaven, Hull, or Rotterdam. I will go to Derbyshire if we make Hull. It is lovely in Europe at this time of the year, in comparison to last winter, everything vivid green, and the weather as mild , as possible. I intend getting where it is a j bit warmer though for next win- , ter, North America probably. I wish to have a look round ] there before returning to N,Z., j which will not be very long, 1 though lam far from tired of vis- 1 iting strange places. It is very ( fascinating and I am having a 1 great time, but — I Well Gran, I have to give this to the steward to post, will write , again soon. Give mv best love ( to all at home, and a big hug for yourself. _ . 1 From your loving grandson, ( Chris. ,
