Auckland Automobile Association

To A.A.A. Agents

There still seems to be considerable confusion with regard to tail lights and number plates. On our last circular the wording read 2 square inches in diameter. The regulations states: “Two square inches in area.” The interpretation of the regulation is:—

“The rear light must be moved as near as possible to the right hand side of the car and as the number plate must be clearly illuminated it wilt be necessary to move this also. If the red glass of the rear light is of a reflecting nature, and is not less than 2 square inches in area i.e approximately I % inches in diameter, it will not be necessary to have a reflector. It should be carefully noted, however, that a plain red glass is not sufficient. Many of the new cars are now fitted with a prism glass which naturally reflects a light from an overtaking vehicle. If a reflector is fitted it must be placed as near as possible to the rear light. A motorist will still be liable to prosecution it his rear light fails, even though he is fitted with a reflector.

The regulations are now in force. Clauses which drivers should pay particular attention to are:—

1. The Offside rule, whereby traffic approaching from the right has the right of way. 2. Traffic signals of turning to the right and stopping.

3. Motorist may now be stopped at any time and his brakes inspected. 4. Passing on corners. It is now an offence to pass a car on a blind corner and only 2 cars may drive abreast.

5. Mirrors, Rear vision mirrors must be fitted.
