No Remission Of Silence
Decision of Minister
Since our criticism of the Hokianga Star’s outburst over the sentence imposed upon Robin Tanton here for the theft of a camera a petition has been presented to the Minister for Justice asking for a remission of the sentence imposed upon him. The Minister referred the matter to the Justices of the Peace Messrs Mclntosh and Bedggood, for their comment, and upon receipt of this he replied as follows l lam directed by the Minister of Justice to acknowledge the receipt'Jof your memorandum of the Ist May setting out the facts with regard to the conviction of Robin Tanton on the 16th April for stealing a camera valued at £3-3-6.
In reply I am directed by the Minister to inform you that in view of the circumstances mentioned he is unable to see his way to recommend His Excellency dhe Governor General to remit any portion of the sentence imposed.
