Waipapakauri Racing Club

Easier Non-Totalisator Meeting Attracts Large Crowd Fixture Great Success After racing away from home for three years the Waipapakauri Racing Club was granted a permit to hold a non-totalisator meeting on its new course on Easter Monday. It was thought iby some that this would not be a gathering to attract much interest but the prophets were doomed to disappointment for the public came in hundreds and soon the Waipapakauri Racecourse grounds bore an appearance never before seen on the trysting ground. Everywhere one looked was to be seen an array of motorcars representing thousands o f pounds. The public certainly came for a day’s sport and this was provided without stint by the Waipapakauri Racing Club. The programme of events was limited to six races and the Committee wisely arranged the running of these so as to leave ample ;ime for the public to enjoy themselves in other ways. The fields during the day were letter than those experienced at he recent combined meeting teld at Kawakawa and had there >een a totalisator in operation it s safe to say big figures would lave been registered. The races were run to time and ome good finishes were witnesed. Some of the visiting horselen attempted to beat the starter, ut Mr Clark effected some fine ispatches on the whole. With barrier his task would have been luch easier than it was. Kawiti went to the front at the start and leading all the way won by three lengths from Maniahera. Indian Maid close up third. Time Imin 34 secs. Waipapakauri Easter Handicap, Of 50 sovs. First horse 40 sovs and a Cup valued at 25 guineas presented by T. J. Fleming, Esq, and the second 10 sovs from the stake. One and a-quarter miles. Mr Vincent May’s ch.g., Fiery Lad Campfire—Glazier aged, 9.5 (Gunn) I Mr W H Cuthbert’s b.g., Jokeform, 6 years, 8 10, (Puncheon) 2 Mr W. Dale’s b.g., Sussex, 8.8 (Wilson) 3 Also started / Bowman, Master Leigh, Wild Arch. From an excellent start Fiery Lad and Master Leigh were first to show out with Jokeform, Wild Arch, Bowman and Sussex running in that order. Passing the judge the first time Fiery Lad was showing out slightly in front of Master Leigh but rounding the bottom turn the latter headed Fiery Lad and entered the back stretch with a neck advantage. Fiery Lad assumed command as they raced for the tnrn for home and Jokeform and Sussex improved their positions. Fiery Lad had shaken off Master Leigh as they straightened up for the run to the judge and then Jokeform put in a run and Sussex could be seen making a great sprint on the outside. At the distance Fiery Lad was going well within himself and Jokeform and Sussex were having a great race for second money. Fiery Lad won convincingly by three lengths from Jokeform who was a length and a half clear of Sussex. Then came Master Leigh, Wild Arch, Bowman. Time 2min 15 2-ssecs.

Mangonui County Hack Handicap of 12 sovs. First horse 10 sovs and the second horse 2 sovs from the stake. Open to horses owned in the Mangonui County for three months at the time of starting. Star Love was the first to break the line after a fair start and she led Master Leigh, Indian Maid, and Screwbolt in that order along the back. There was little change in the order swinging round the top turn but as thev headed for home Indian Maid and Screwbolt each threw out strong challenges but Star Love hung on long enough to win by a length and a half from Indian Maid, the latter being a couple of lengths in front of Master Leigh. Then came Okahu well back. Time I min 22 secs.

Waiharara Handicap of 36 sovs.* First horse 25 sovs and the second horse 5 sovs from the stake. Six furlongs. Mr Vincent May’s ch.g.,

Plaisted’s b.g., Just Quietly, aged, 9.4 (McGregor) 3 Also started : Sussex, Bowman. Fiery Lad went to the front from the fall of the flag and led along the back from Just Quietly, Jokeform and Sussex. Bowman refused to leave the mark and bucked his jockey off. Fiery Lad led all the way and won well but Jokeform was a good second, but he did not appear to be ridden right out. Time I min I9secs.

Ahipara Handicap [of 20 sovs. First horse 17 sovs, and the second horse 3 sovs from the stake. Five furlongs.

King Multifid hopped out with a good lead and showed the way into the straight, but here Fiery Lad challenged and coming on won by a couple ot lengths from King Multifid who lasted long enough to beat Screwbolt. Time 1 min 6 secs. Bowman again refused to go away at the start.
