The Price of Pigs
A Farmer’s View Combine Operating Cost of Production A well-known farmer in ’.he Northland on Monday forwarded us a statement which he beli.ves sns out the actual position regarding the cost of raising bacon pigs. In the first place, he says, each pig costs the farmer £i tnen there is the cost of reeding it until such time as it is considered ready for bacon. The price .his season is 4d a lb. and on ar, average of HO lbs. this represents 35s for the pig less 2s wharfage, 2s freight and is insurance. Then the farmer must allow for the time of feeding and the food, depreciation on styes, troughs and the land where the pigs run. After allowing for these points the return to the farmer is 3/6, This means that those who handle the pigs have matters reduced to a very fine art.
