Bill Defeate 1 Great Interest in Metsure Mr. Atmore’s Amendment Special to Age Wellington Last Night Crowded galleries were witnessed in the House of Representatives on Wednesday evening those assembled antirip -fog a keen debate on the Bible in Schools Measure. It was considered that the House would sit all night on this Bill, but it was defeated soon after the supper adjournment. it was noticed before the tea adjournment that there were signs of the discussion breaking. When the question was fast before the House there was much heat displayed by members but on Wednesday e .enir.g the debate was characterised by an entire absence of strong feeling. There was a keen interest in Mr Atmore’s amendment that the Bill be read a second time six months hence, indeed there has not been so much of a real interest in the House for several years. The amendment was carried by 36 votes to 31, the Bill thus being defeated. It is of interest to recall that when this question was discussed in 1925 it was defeated by 32 votes to 26.
