The Northland Age OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE FARMERS’ UNION. Published a Week. WEDNESDAY and FRIDAY Price Twopence. FRIDAY, NOV. 4. CHEAP LAW
A '«w members of the Mangnnui County public were treated to a lecture this week on what is right and proper conduct when a court case is pending. It was said that m discuss the suspension of a man from his position, when such a man was charged with the commission of an indictable offence is improper and illegal. This is a sample of the cheap law that is expounded by a few bush lawyers in the North. It is pure unadulterated bluff and nonsense.' Fortunately there are not many people who will treat such 3n obvious piece of bluff seriously. We frequently hear of officials of public concerns being suspended when under suspicion of having being guilty, of irregularities. It is not a serious matter for a person to be suspended pending his acquittal from any charge made against him. If he is innocent or if the circumstances are such as to condone the offence then there is no danger of such a person losing his position. Suspension is a protection for those likely to suffer if the person accused were permitted to continue in his position and in the process he aggravated one offence by committing others. Public men must take this stand with public servants. It is only commou justice to the people who elect them.
