A Milton farmer has had an interesting experience in the growing of lucerne. When he took over his farm a few years ago he began to experiment with luc. me sr.d the neighbours were frankly sceptical: but he persevered, and this year, on a 20-acre patch of lucerne, he wintered four sheep an acre and wii.t. red them well. On another patch, sown in February 1927 the lucerne is now lßin high, and will very soon be ready for cutting. In the form of hay both sheep and cattle eat it greedily The Milton farmer informed an Ot :go Daily Times reporter that he is quite convinced that this wonderful fodderplant can be grown quite successfully on the Toko Plain especially where there is a good depth of soil. At the conference of Associated Chambers of Commerce the Dunedin Chamber is to argue in favour of procuring a training ship for New Zealand. This remit will be supported heartily by Dunedin delegates, not as a matter of form, but in downright earnest. It is understood that the plea will not be for a vessel of the Worcester class, that would be out of reach, but for a sauarengged craft cf Sav 300 or 400 tons in which to undertake ocean cruises. It is already known that the ren.it will be backed up bv some of the northern delegates.
Like the fusel oil in bad whisky so the Nicot ne in -:rong tobacco is injurious to health. It is an astonishing fact that the leaf produced in certain localities of the Auckland and Nelson districts contains less Nicotine than any other tobacco known. This is of the utmost importance with regard to the development of the N.Z. Tobacco industry, because it is just thes- ruild types of leaf that are eagerly sought after by manufaclurers, abroad and fabulous prices are often paid for them. New Zealand indeed will become famous for its unique tobacco, and the local product will be our national smoke. Unlike some of the foreign tobaccos, the NZ. article does not bite the tongue, it sno es smoo h and mellow arid leaves tie .Touth sweet and clean. Moreover it is al'. pure tobacco with a distinctive flavour, obtainable in various strengths. Cut Plug No io for those who appreciate* a full body,]iud RivcrhejJ G old for the lover o' a very mild aromatic, while Toasted Navy Cut (Bulldog) represents the medium strength.
