The Missing Launch “Speedwell”

No news has been received of the launch “Speedwell,’’ which left Auckland on 26th September for the Bay of Islands, with Mr Edwin Walker of Waitangi, as the sole person on board.

The master of the Government steamer “Tutanekai,” which has arrived at Onehunga, after 12 days on the northern coast, reports that a close Search was made from the Great Barrier to the Bay of Islands during the rounds of the lighthouses: It was his opinion that the ' Speedwell” had foundered near Elizabeth Reef or Wide Berth Island, a bout halfway between Whangarei and Gape Brett. There was a treacherous bottom close inshore on this part of the coast, and it was possible the launch had struck and filled.
