PUBLIC OPINION
(To the Editor)
Sir,—The following are facts as regards floods for the past five years regarding my own case. As asked for in a recent issue of your paper. During 1922 I purchased three acres of land for market gardening from Messrs Bell Bros, suffering twenty-three floods on that property (£IBO was the price paid for above) exclusive of incidental expenses. This property was sold to me as suitable for above purpose and on which I spent £290 in improvements minus labour. Owing to floods I was forced to leave it as a gardening proposition eventually buying one acre of ground from Mr L H Bedggood for £lO2 cash, being told this property had been subject to floods very many years ago but was considered by Mr Bedggood as quite safe for gardening as it was practically twenty years since it had been flooded. I have tried to garden on this property and am forced to abandon it on account of fl.oods three of which have exceeded 2ft 9ins in depth. On this property I have spent £238 exclusive of the house which 1 shifted from the site purchased from Bell Bros. Personally I am- very pleased to see that you are making public a few tacts about this over-boos-ted portion of the Northern part of New Zealand and I trust this letter will be one more means of preventing strangers from being taken down as 1 was. Personally after living here for a little over live years I think I was unfortunate in believing what I was told. I am etc. H H Rule.
