FRIDAY, AUGUST 5. INDIGENT NATIVES.
The action taken in the House of Representatives by Colonel Bell, M.P., in the direction of inducing the Government to supply indigent natives with food and other requirement to the amount of the financial relief now given them is to be commended. The object of the Colonel’s action is to prevent Ratana from securing lrom these natives a portion of the pension moneys granted them. This will mean that storekeepers will at least be paid and also that Ratana’s bank will suffer. This will be a good thing, because quite a numberot natives have been paying suns into this famous bank on the offchance of getting much in return. It is, of course, well known that they will not get anything extra and indeed, it is doubtfQl if they'' will ever see their investments again. Colonel Bell, M.P., has' dpne well to face this questiou and it is to be hoped that his efforts will be rewarded by the Government adopting the proposal.
