1 MEETING OF COUNCIL The Council mcl at Kaitaia last Friday Present: Crs. A. H. Louis (chairman), J. N. Berghan, It,. Evans, T. S. Houston, C. J. Barnball, R. T. Wrathall and W. Vickers. An apology tor absence was forwarded by Cr. Kitchen Electric Power Mr. H. C. Blundell, clerk of the Bay of Islands County, wrote lorwarding a copy of a letter from the Chief Electrical Engineer re a supply of electric power from Arapuni. The chief asked for the possible requirements of each district. He suggested setting up a committee to work up the matter. The chairman said the matter was one of vital importance to the district and he suggested getting the Kaitaia Town Board dairy companies and others interested to furnish information. Cr, Wrathall thought the Council should not pledge the county to Arapuni scheme He did not think the time ripe, and in any case-power could be got locally from district streams. It might be better for North Auckland to have its .own /one. Cr. Barribail said the matter was worthy of consideration. In the Waikato the power was an advantage in many ways but the cost was about the same.for driving milking plants as oil driven plants The cost of reticulation on by-roads was high, costing settlers in some cases up to £24. He did not wish the county lied up to the scheme until further information was obtained. Cr. Evans mentioned Okahu falls as a j possible source of supply. A committee consisting of representatives of the Kaitaia Town Board, Chambers of Commerce, secretaries of Dairy Companys, along with the Engineer and clerk, s to be set up to obtain the necessary information asked for by the Chief Electrical Engineer. The Main Highways Board wrote asking for information re the BroadwoodKaitaia road (Awaroa bridge to Herekino bridge) which has been recommended to the Board to be made a Government road.

Resolved that Crs. Vickers and Berghan along with the engineer and clerk, be asked to furnish the necessary details to the Main Highways Council with a view of having the same declared a Government road. A copy of a petition from nine settlers asking for a road from Ngataki to Waihupo and the school was received from the Lands Department asking for the Council’s recommendations. Referred to the Riding member and engineer lor report. Ihe N.S.S. Co’s agent at Awanui (Mr. li. G. Subritzkyl, wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the stockyards at Awanui, which are in urgent need of repair, and asked the Council to put them in order. Cr, Evans and the engineer are to report giving an estimate of the cost. General Mr. A. W. Masters is to be paid the sum of £l2 in full settlement of his claim for fencing in public pound at Pukepoto. Acoounts amounting to £432-8-3 were passed for payment. It was resolved that consideration of the appointmant of a county engineer be deferred until next meeting of Council, and that Mr. Torrie be paid at the tpte of £4OO per year from last meeting o'f the Council. I he clerk is to ascertain fees chargable as wharf dues at'Awauui wharf. The Marine Department is to be requested to have a fixed continuous light erected at Rangi Rapid Point at the entrance of the ivlangonui harbour. Mr. Peter Lunjevich is to be ofiered the j sum of £25 on condition that he procures i and legalises a road access to his property at Puheta. J The county solicitor is to be asked to j furnish the necessary requirements to have the Kaitaia public pound put in a legal position. The engineer is to confer v ,with Mr. H. B. Matthews re repair work on Larmer’s I Road and report to next meeting. The engineer was instructed to have an j expenditure made on Church Road to the I value of £5, and report thereon. The sum of £5 is to be speut on Gum- ] field Road Ahipara. The engineer was instructed to have repairs effected to the Mangonui wharf at a cost not exceeding £6OO. The engineer is to report on the damages reported to be done on the Paranui Road by Messrs Roger Bros through using bnllocks thereon.
