THE MINISTERS VISIT
The solution of the settlement of the Kaitaia Swamp area rests almost entirely on the amount of rates to be levied. If the drainage rate fixed is too high, the result will be that settlers will be unable to make good. This fact should be put forcibly before the MinisterofLands when he visits the district. The Government made a big financial sacrifice over the draining of the Rangitaiki swamp, and I there is no reason why this district should ; not receive similar consideration. Other matters concerning the Northland must be put before the Minister. He must be made realise how much this district suffjeisfioin its isolated condition and the necessity for railway connection before it can develop. Again Mr. McLeod must . b- impressed with the possibilities of the j Northland, for we must remember all the I time that lo the majority of politicians as to the majority of the people of the Dominion this is unknown country. The Government is pledged to help unsettled districts such as the Northland, and it j now has a chance to prove the genuineness o f its election promises. No part of New Zealand suffers more from isolation than does this district.
