Members present on each occasion passed a vote of thanks to and confidence in Mr. Sweeny, enrolling themselves in thh Country Party Political League and undertaking to arrange the necessary finance in their respective districts. The great Imperalist—Sir Allen BellWhy not ? Recent sales by the Star Garage and Motor Transport Co. The annual meeting of theKaitaia Brass Band took place on Tuesday evening. Our report, together with correspondence and other matters is held over. The dancing season has long since commenced, but the most important social event of theyearhasyet to come. It is the Horticultural Society’s Ball to be held in the Northland Hall on September the 25th Every body will be there, including old ’■Dad” who is now stocktaking in the pre. cincts of his wardrobe. The ladies, as usual, will see to it in good time that their frocks will be in the best ever. Make a note of the date and help a worthy society. Years ago our ancestors burned the native bush to plant pinus and other trees; now that the native bush has been almost eradicated piaus radiata brings 22/6 per 100 super feet in the tree. Can you beat it ? No, well invest in the Matakana Radiata forests to-day. It will pay you handsomely. A warm debate was anticipated by the delegates from the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce who attended the meeting at Victoria Valley last Thursday night in connection with the proposed Awanui Harbour Bill,, and although they received a courteous hearing it was plain from the outset that the proposal would be well and truly turned down. As a result of the opposition from different quarters the Bill will probably be dropped. Members of the Chamber, and particularly the secretary (Mr. C. B. Michte) have given much time and investigation to the matter and have shown the need for improved shipping facilities in this area and residents of the Western Area are under a debt of gratitude to them for their labour. A harbour is wanted here but it seems the time is not yet ripe.

The new dining rooms in Puckey’s Building, Kaitaia, will be opened to the public on Tuesday next. Further parcels of old clothes for Native children have been received from Mrs. Dunn, and Miss Hanlon, There is further need for parcels and those willing to contribute may leave same at the “Age” office. Don’t forget the Awanui Tennis Club dance to-morrow night, A reminder is given of Mr. Grounds address at the Agricultural Hail, Kaitaia, on next Saturday night. Mr. Grounds is chairman of the Dairy Control Board and his address is of great importance not only to farmers but to business men as well and therefore the attendance at the meeting should be large. Says an exchange : “Besides selling town sections, standing for Parliament, and acting the big chief generally, Allen Hell, the burly member for the Winterless North is a newspaper publisher.. Nearly every column of his “buster” is crammed with Items concerning himself. In tact the paper might be termed a seif admiration journal. There are also a few ads and some pictures of the Winterless. Each issue is eagerly awaited by the simple but kinkly folk of the land which he claims to haye made.” Prize winners at the Awanui card party--last evening were Mrs. Frank Puckey and Mr. A. Anderson. On Tuesday last, Fred Conlon, a pupil of the Herekino school broke his leg while playing. The accident emphasises the need ior some first aid equipment at country schools far removed from doctors. The provision of such equipment j might well engage the attention of the j members ot the district.
