WATER SUPPLY WANTED

The recent lire emphasises t ie great and urgent need for a water supply in Kaitaia. It is too much to hope that there will be no more fires, therefore it behoves us to prepare for any further contingency that may arise. Under present conditions, when a fire breaks ont, the only thing to ito is to stand idly by and watch the fire burn itself out. This state of affairs should be remedied at the earliest possible date ; we

cannot afford to have the whole town wiped out for want of water, and more especially when there is such an abundant supply close at hand which could be secured at a comparatively low cost. The town’s proximity to the rivermakesit an easy matter to pump water from the source to elevated concrete tanks placed along Commerce Street. If only two of these tanks were erected, with sufficient hose the ordinary fire could be extinguished. Again, in a dry spell, householders could obtain water from the tanks and even the main street could be watered, keeping down the obnoxious dust. This provision for fire fighting would include a much needed service. Failing this a supply could be got from Okaihu, The facilities are not luxuries; they are necessities, and we urge business men to at once avail themselves of the great advantages of an adequate water supply. It will he no use locking the stable after the horse has been stolen.
