SCHOOL NEWS.
(To the Editor), Sir,—l notice that you now allot space in your paper to church news, and rightly so, I say. Would it be too much to ask you to chronicle the County schools news. School committees, secretaries, inspectors, doctors etc could be asked for a report. To my mind it is simply scandalous how some of the schools are run here in the North, and the time has arrived when parents should ease off their state of apathy towards things educational. I know of cases where schools were closed so that teachers could attend clearing sales, and birthday and christening parties. It is quite a common occurrence for certain schools to open one hour late in the morning, and Christmas and other holidays are invariably extended, without authority. What is to hinder a teacher from asking for fictitious sick leave and then go joy riding with the maid of the mist, or the king of the castle ? I know children who have left school at thirteen years old, who can scarcely read or write their own names, in spite of the fact that fifteen years is the leaving age. Of course we have some estimable and consciencous teachers here, but why should the selfish and negligent one be allowed to grow fat without protest. I am, etc. MULTUM IN PAR VO. Peria 24th Oct 1921.
