PROPOSED CHORAL SOCIETY.

A meeting was held in the Northland Hall on Thursday evening last to discuss the question of forming a choral or musical society of some description in Kaitaia. There was an attendance of over 60.

Mr Hollay, as Convenor of the meeting, took the chair and opened the proceedings. He said that everyone must recognise the necessity of some kind of musical society in the district. They were continually receiving accessions to their strength in the way of both vocal and instrumental musicians, and a musical society would be able to utilise such talent to the betterment and advancement of the district. Through the courtesy of the local press their views had been put before the public, and it remained for this meeting to decide whether % the time was ripe to establish a musical Society here. After Mr Hollay had spoken Mr Grigg was voted to the chair, and took charge of the meeting. Mr Grigg thought it was too ambitious to talk of producing an opera; they might possibly produce an operetta, cantalas, glees etc. He hoped they would form a Musical Union. ■Mr Price: “I don’t like the sound of that word ‘Union,’ Mr Chairman. The work “strike” is too generally connected with it” (laughter). Various speakers (including Messrs F. Holder, C. E. Scots, and Price) thought there was enough musical talent in the district to justify the formation of such a Society. It was resolved that a musical Societv should be formed under the title “The Kaitaia Choral Society. The election of officers for the Society was then proceeded with and the following were appointed: President, MrF. Holder; Vice-Presidents, Mrs L. H.Bell, Mrs A. Logan,MessrsGriggandß. Anderson ; Secretary,Mrs Broadbent; Committee Mesdames McKinnon and F. B. Rowe,’ Miss Woolhouse, Messrs Scott, Price, McKinnon; Conductor, Mr Hollay; Librarian, Mr Archibald; Pianistes, Mrs L. H. Bell and Mr Anderson. Mr Holder took the Chair as President. The fee for members and honorary members was fixed at Si- per annum on the motion of Mr Scott, seconded by Mr Price. It was decided that the work of the Society should start as from tonight, some simple pieces being put in rehearsal. The room was canvassed for members, with very satisfactory results. For the sake of the district it is to be hoped that this movement, which has apparently started so enthusiastically, will move along until the Kaitaia Choral Society becomes a factor in the social and musical life of the community.
