(By Telegraph—Special to “ Age.”) Wellington, September 19.
The Minister for Agriculture made a statement in Parliament concerning phosphates from Nauru and Ocean islands. During six months 30,000 tons of phosphate rock were imported into the Dominion. The cost of raw rock at New Zealand ports is £3 17/- per ton; ground phosphate, current prices, £7 15/-. Ground phosphate rock has not yet come into general use, and its chief value is as topdressing in districts where there is a good rainfall. The prices at present quoted are too high, if considered on a basis of present-day landed cost of Nauru rock phosphate. Government is introducing a Bill to increase totalisator permits. The member for Napier gave notice of motion disagreeing with the Racing Commission’s report. Mr. Vernon Reed’s Local Elections and Polls Amendment, allowing absentee voters permits at local elections, passed last night. The Whakatane Freezing Co. agreed yesterday to go into voluntary liquidation. An effort is being made to reconstruct.
