GOLF NOTES.
The Kaitaia Golf Club closed the season on Saturday, when approaching and driving competitions were held. A large crowd of visitors and players assembled on the links, where tea was served by Mrs. Bidmead and Miss Archibald. Great interest was taken in the competitions, and it is evident from the strokes played by many first years’ players that golf has become a business, and well established in Kaitaia. The ladies’ approaching was won by Miss De Renzy and the driving by Miss Shakespeare, a visiting player, who drove 140 yards, the next best by Miss Hickey being 40 yards short. In the men’s competitions the approaching and putting was won by W. Gilligan who holed out in two and elicited applause from the spectators by putting down a remarkably fine putt. The driving competition was won by H. Dunn, with a beautiful ball of 230 yards. At the end of the day Mr. C. E. Scott declared the season closed and thanked Mr. Hester for the free use of his property, as links. In-calling for three cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Hester, the speaker voiced the opinion of all that the club owes a debt of gratitude to those two good sports who have assisted in so many mays to make the past season a success.
