THE FARMERS’ UNION.
Messrs. Vernon H. Reed, M.P., J. W. McAuley and Mr. Mackley, (organising secretary of the Farmers’ Union), held a meeting in the Broadwood hall on the 6th May to discuss unionism. A fair number of local farmers turned out and each speaker was given an attentive hearing. Mr. R. Hawkins occupied the chair. After the three gentlemen had addressed the meeting, questions were invited but as non# were forthcoming a vote of thanks concluded the meeting. Mr. Hawkins then asked Mr. Reed if he could give any further information of the proposed freezing works, which Mr. Reed consented to, after which Mr. McAuley invited anyone present who was not already a shareholder to tatae shares, a number of those present complying with his request. Mr. Mackley was also engaged m enrolling new members. Mr. R. Hawkins also brought forward the Te Kara# road metalling question. Mr. Reed was of the opinion that the best panacea for the whole thing was for the Public Works Department to take over the expenditure of the balance of the subsidy themselves. This was approved of by those present.
