The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland has sanctioned the appointment of a chaplain to work among the returned soldiers in Otago. The appointment is for one year, and the stipend was fixed at not less than £3OO, exclusive of house allowances and travelling expenses. The motion was brought before the Synod recently by the Rev. A. Gray, who now in his capacity as chaplain holds the rank of lieutenant-colonel. The roses of pleasure seldom last long enough to adorn the brow of him who plucks them; for they are the only roses which do not retain their sweetness after they have lost their beauty.—Moore.
