WHANGAPE.

A VERY successful concert was given by the Waikeri schoolchildren in the Whangape Hall recently, the proceeds being in aid of the war funds. The concert was a credit in every way and reflects very great credit to the Misses Topia. The sum of 8/2d. was thrown on the stage at the conclusion of Master Tiopira Popata’s recitation “Answer the Call” 7 1 2 d., at the conclusion of the girls concerted item “Red, White and Blue,” and 9/- at the conclusion of the item “ Come Where Duty Calls.” The girls looked charming in red, white and blue dresses, the boys being garbed in plain black suit with white shirt and red ties, the whole making a scene pleasing to the eye.

At the conclusion of the concert a dance was held, Mr. William Ngawaka being M.C., and the music being supplied by Miss Jane Topia, assisted by Misses Ngawaka. During the intervals in the dances, musical items were contributed by Messrs, B. Hotere, P. Leeg, Ngakuru, Irwin and Mr. and Mrs. Tepaa. Before breaking up, Mr. Andrew Ngawaka congratulated the orgsnisers on their good work done and invited the party, 30 strong, to breakfast and dine with him the following day. At the conclusion of the latter function the Chairman of the School Committee, Mr. H. Pukeroa conveyed the thanks of the party to Mr. Ngawaka for his kindly hospitality and the happy band departed for their homes. The recepts totalled £9 95., a most gratifying result.
