We must apologise to our readers for the lack of country news in the last few issues, but there appears to be a conspiracy of silence on the part of our correspondents. Surely something worth chronicling must have happened in the counties of Whangaroa and Mangonui. Is it possible that in the large tract of country between Kaeo and Parengarenga, in which the “Age” circulate*, no weddings, births or deaths have taken place of more than local interest ? We should even welcome the giant mushroom or sea serpent if vouched for by our own correspondent. Perhaps everybody’s thoughts in Mangonui County have been centred on the County election, but if so with the exception of one letter we have heard nothing as to the sayings and doings of the candidates. It is quite impossible for us to travel beyond our own little township in search of news, so we are dependent on our County friends and we sincerely trust they will wake from the lethargy into which they appear to have fallen.
