Awanui Hockey Ball.
The long looked lor ball came off last Friday, 29th ult., and thanks to the energy of Miss Joey Yates and the ladies of tlu Committee nothing was left undone ■ lo make the function a recotd success Mr. Walter Evans’ hall was most tastefully decorated and gave one more the impression of being at a floral fete or carnival than an ordinary ball room. Visitors flocked in from Mangonui, Houhora, Waipapakauri, Ahipara, Kaitaia, Mangatete, etc., etc., and by 8.30 the hall was fairly packed. The floor was perfect, which covers all that could be said of it, and the music of course supplied by Mr. Christensen made everyone feel as if they must dance. The ball opened with the Grand March, in which one hundred and four couples took part and even then the seats appeared to be crowded, so there must have been fully 300 present. The March appeared a gorgeous mass of colouring and the sitters out had a chance of seeing the handsome fancy costumes to advantage. Mr. Christensen was so indefatigable that the clock struck twelve long before the first part of the programme was finished, and a break was made for supper. The ladies had again excelled themselves and those assisting were kept busy lor half an hour handing round the dainties. Dancing then recommenced and was kept up till daylight. Mr. E. C. Denny proved a most efficient M.C., and, with such a large crowd his post was no sinecure. There has always been a great rivalry between Waipapakauri and Awanui in dances, and so far Awanui by this event have beaten the record and given Waipapakauri something to vie with. The weather, which looked threatening in the morning, cleared up and a beautiful night put the finishing touch on everything. Below is a list of some of the fancy costumes, but in such a crowd it was hard to pick them all out.
