HEREKINO. (From our own Correspondent.)
Wc have been experiencing cold squally weather lately, and this is considerably retarding the growth of grass and garden produce. Our dairy factory has now resumed operations, and we hope ior a much better price for butter fat this season. Our school has been closed ior the Michaelmas holidays and a wish is expressed that the bulk of the holidays should fall in the winter season, when the so-called roads are unsafe for the smaller children to toddle to school. What between sickness and holidays the backblocks child is unable to put in a first-class school attendance, and the result it disheartening to teacher and parents. Considerable dissatisfaction is being expressed at the action of the Crown Lands Board in locking up so much Government vacant land in this vicinity. It seems our Member in spite of his promises is unable to move that Department from its apathetic indifference to the requirements of this district, and it speaks well for the temperament of our settlers that they do not go in for more agitation, which would be done in most districts of the Dominion.
Our two County ridings, Herekino and Wbangape, will both be contested this ensuing County election, and it is fervently hoped that a resident Councillor of this settlement will be returned for each riding. As to the winegrowers’ statements re drunkenness in this district, the previous and present constables should be most able to express an independent, unbiassed opinion on the subject; also our S.M’s. I am sadly afraid friend Cosson would come out on the top each time.
