Waipapakauri Races.
On Boxing Day there was a large crowd at Waipapakauri, most of the holiday makers being attracted thither by the excellent programme of the Racing Club. It is almost needless to say that at “Old Joe’s” the visitors were treated handsomely and that the refreshments and viands provided were plentiful in quantity and of the choicest quality. As to the sport it was well managed and some of the racing was very interesting, the walk over in the Welter Handicap being the only unsatisfactory item. On the whole the competition was keen but it is stated that in one event a Johnny Armstrong was engaged aud that the Stewards would have done well to have taken cognisance of his presence. The following are the results : Maiden Plate.—Bessie 1, Lady Hilda 2, Burmah 3, All started. Flying Handicap.—Loougana 1, Dandaloo 2, Cabaret 3. Simple Simon and Winnie also started. Stewards’ Handicap.—Eva 1, Sir Godfrey 2, Bundah 3. The other starters were Bessie, Cadiz and Lady Hilda. County Plate.—St. Louis and Mystikoff dead heat, Bundah 3. These were the only contestants. A great race. Waipapakauri Cup.—Simple Simon 1, Cabaret 2. Only this pair went to the post and the match was a gift for the winner although he was giving 161bs to Cabaret. Welter Handicap.—-Dandaloo walked over. The going was very hard and most of the horses showed signs of leg trouble after the racing, Loongana, for this reason, having to he scratched for the Cup.
