Maori Lands.

Beply to the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce. In connection with the resolution passed at the recent meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce, as to native lands in the North, the secretary of the Chamber, Mr. J. Mackie, has received the following reply from the Native Lands Department“ I am directed by the Hon. the Native Minister to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 21st August. I am not quite clear as to your query as to the area ‘ individualised.’ If by this you mean the area partitioned and now owned in severalty, I , feel sure that a good deal of compilation would be necessary before I could supply the figures. In the majority of cases the length of time which will elapse before y lands so dealt with are open for selection depends mainly as to whether or not I negotiations are taken in band as between the natives and prospective lessees or purchasers. I need hardly inform you that the Government, through the Maori Land Boards, has no statutory function in the administration of any areas except trust lands, and consequently any dealing with lands other than trust lands must be by private treaty between the parties. It may be of interest to you to know that the Te Karae Block, containing 17,673 acres, and vested in the Tokerau Maori Land Board, will be offered for selection by lease early in October. This block is situated near Kohnkohu, Hokianga. On the recommendations of the Native Land Commission the Governor-in-Council recently vested a further area of 51,619 acres 3 roods 24 perches in the Board, and an Order-in-Council dealing with an additional area of 5507 acres 2 roods 25 perches is expected to be signed in the course of the next few days. A further area of about 45,000 acres will be dealt with as soon as the necessary inquiries have been made into the titles. The t whele of these areas will be offered by A the Board for sale or lease by public * competition as soon as the necessary preliminary survey work and roading have been carried out.’*
