Mr. L. V. Harcourt, Chief Commissioner of Works, speaking at Crawshawbooth, Lancashire, said that Britain’s naval supremacy would be maintained whatever the cost which was better met from England’s ever increasing wealth than by loans. Never had Britain’s relations with Germany, whether commercial, colonial, political or dynastic, been on a firmer footing than to-day. No personal animosity existed between the two Governments and peoples. There is some talk of an alliance between Turkey and Greece in connection with a striking demonstration which took place at Constantinople on Saturday. A special correspondent describes Hyderabad, India, where floods occurred last week, as “ a black grave.” In one spot six hundred corpses were removed from the slush on Thursday, and one hundred on Friday. The “ Daily Telegraph ” says that if Britain’s revenue continues to shrink at the same, rate as during the past few months it is likely that Mr. Lloyd George, the Chancellor of the. Exchequer, will have to announce a deficit in April of eight millions. The “ Telegraph ” points out that the country must meet, besides, upwards of ten millions for Old Age Pensions and an extra four millions for the Navy,
